Declutter Before the Holiday Rush Begins

October 1, 2026

The holiday season has a way of arriving very quickly once October is underway. Before the decorations come out, the out-of-town guests arrive, and the gift bags start accumulating, there's a small but valuable window to reset your home. A focused decluttering effort in October pays dividends right through until the new year.

Why October Is the Right Time

It's far enough from the holidays that you're not yet overwhelmed, but close enough that your motivation is real. Clearing space now means you'll have somewhere to put the things the season brings in — and your home will feel genuinely welcoming rather than just rearranged.

A Room-by-Room Starting Point

  • Storage areas first. Closets, garages, and crawl spaces tend to accumulate items on autopilot. Pull things out, be honest about what you actually use, and create a donation pile without overthinking it.
  • Kids' rooms and toy areas. Before new gifts arrive, involve children (age-appropriately) in choosing items to pass along to other children. It's a meaningful habit to build.
  • The kitchen. Expired pantry items, duplicate tools, and appliances you haven't touched in a year are all fair game. A clear kitchen makes holiday cooking far more enjoyable.
  • Linens and bedding. If you're expecting guests, now is the time to launder guest linens and assess whether anything needs replacing before they arrive.

The One-In, One-Out Mindset

The holiday season naturally brings more things into the home — gifts, decorations, specialty food items. Adopting a loose one-in, one-out approach through this period helps prevent the accumulation from compounding. It doesn't need to be rigid; even applying it half the time makes a noticeable difference.

Donate Thoughtfully

Many local organisations ramp up their donation intake in the weeks before the holiday season. Clothing, housewares, books, and children's items are consistently needed. Dropping off a carload in October means your items are likely to reach someone before winter, which is a genuinely satisfying outcome.

Decluttering doesn't have to be a dramatic overhaul. Even an hour or two each weekend through October can transform how your home feels — and sets you up to actually enjoy the season ahead rather than just manage it.
